    Hmmm.

This wasn't quite what I was expecting. I've only seen the first few eps, however...

I wouldn't mind if they just created new BGM/FX (or used sounds for which they could get the rights) for the show. IMO it'd be the classier version of the "classic" Funimation moves of cutting/reducing the expensive music tracks from its anime and making English versions of Japanese songs using completely different lyrics and instrumentation.

That they might even need to get the permission of the Japanese to do anything like this is frustrating; to abridge Cartman: "It's mah [license], ah do what ah want!" I remember being told by many bang/zoom people (eg:tony oliver) that the reason that their outtakes were so rarely on the dvds was because the Japanese wouldn't give them permission. I thought that was bogus, since adv (sadly, not really sentai) and funi have had those on their releases forever. Though the more I hear about how some of the Japanese have to control every aspect of NA releases the more plausible that bang/zoom excuse becomes.

Why would they need a sub-only dvd and a dub dvd of this? Would it be because they've already announced that this one will be sub-only? If so, couldn't they just pull a Funimation and delay it and then release it as only a bilingual version (again a better version of a funi trick lol)?

Though why would the current license holder of AL go through all the rigmarole and expense of getting the license just to stream it on a site that doesn't strike me as being well-watched? Since it is an ADV show I assume that the worst has happened and that the license holder was forced to take on AL.

That might explain why I'm not really up on the subject as I've been trying to repress everything about the CW as everything I've seen on it has been for the Twilight demographic. I'm not in that demo. Well, to be fair, some of the things I've been forced to see on it are more "hunger games" demo than twilight and those are almost watchable. Almost

Whoever has the rights to angelic layer and is streaming it is already leaps and bounds above disco and Nozomi on the rescue release front as I don't believe that either is streaming all of its rescues. If they are it is news to me. If disco is then I call shenanigans as, having once again seen one of their low-quality printings of Goldenboy, they bad better not have the money to be streaming.

Already? Wow. TAN is serious about this. I was expecting to have to wait up to 12 more hours, as I've become accustomed yo lately by Funimation's practices of waiting until it is nigh High Noon in Texas on the schedule release day to post eps.

  • The art looks better than I was expecting. I'm somewhat surprised. I doubt that I'll enjoy the show as Gainax and I don't see eye-to-eye on, well, almost everything but the art is much more detailed than I expected from them in this day and age. It's no EVA but it looks like PS&G didn't lead to them forgetting how to draw lol.

Though this reminds me of why Titan must become insanely popular as, now that I've seen detailed art in a modern show, detailed art that makes the whole "moe" thing almost palatable, I cannot go back. Every show must have this, or be pretty darn exceptional in some other area to compensate.

That said, this does have guns in the picture so there's that. As Pickles the Drummer said, "Guns are cool!"

Is this a genderswapped pic; is giving moeblob-ified female characters a (crudely drawn) dude's torso a "thing now"; can the artist just not draw torsos?

IMO this pic doesn't capture her simple-minded nature and over-the-top food obsession as well as the show does as her mouth is hidden from view and her face is so abstracted that the emotion just isn't as present. In the show, her eyes grew wide and "lit up" when she talked about food. They made her look ecstatic and bat-excrement crazy at the same time. In this picture, she simply has very large eyes. Ain't the same thing.

Score one for detailed art because the highly-detailed art of Titan captured her essence more than did this moeblob. Awww yeah.

Okay, maybe I would have been less harsh on it if it had been the meat that she stole from the officers' storeroom in lieu of that piece of abstracted bread. If so, it would only have been because I would have been less objective because I would have been snickering at it

BTW has anyone else noticed that Titan hasn't had that much in the way of bona fide character development? Armin and Erin in ep 11 do only what they could only dream of doing in ep 11 but their overall deportment is the same as it was back then, that's what I'm feeling. That's what I'm noticing. While we have seen elaboration upon their current behavior it has only been through flashbacks, which don't really develop a character so much as justify their current behavior.

Flashbacks seem like a way to give characters depth without actually making them too deep to be really "shounen-y". Other anime have done stuff like this, Naruto would be an example, but somehow Titan just does it better. I do think that Titan needs to show more flashbacks with Erin's father. That could help take Erin further from "stereotypical shounen protagonist" towards "real character".

Maybe I'm wrong on this, so I'm tossing that theory out here. Also I needed the typing practice.

  • So far, so good. I'm glad that all the good things I've heard about this series appear to be true. I'm looking forward to watching the final half.

Does it get better? Cause I just, last night, rewatched ep 1 and it was, well, weird.

Momo goes around killing people. Once dead, these people don't want to go to their afterlife. To deal with this, Momo makes a deal with them: I'll grant you one wish, but if I do, then you have to mosey on down to the afterlife peaceably. I'm not clear on whether or not Momo can force them to go to the afterlife after she kills them, whether she gives them this "one wish" thing purely out of guilt or if there's more to it than that, but either way it is ridiculous.

I believe that the show could be pretty cool if it went somewhere with that, having Momo challenge the ridiculousness of her situation. Does it do anything like that?

  • Psychopuppet, do you buy everything that has the Sentai logo on it?

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who bought Golgo 13 Blu-ray complete collection, though it would be a little sad if the only other person on Earth (lol) who bought it happened to buy it "just because".

Though, in fairness, I did buy Momo: The God Girl of Death just because it as a Maiden Japan release. Which is kinda brutal as I, after seeing ep 1, do not see the awesomeness that the "Internets" promised me was in it...

I hear that admitting painful stuff is theraputic so here goes: so far this year I've bought/preordered a veritable mountain of non-Sentai stuff as Sentai just hasn't been releasing stuff that fits the bill IMO. What, as a Sentai fan, could be more painful than that?

  • celestial_being replied to the topic Re: Btooom! in the forum.
HSotD ended on a downer? When did this happen?

As it stands now, I can't help but feel that you're trying to present Btooom! as more than it is. If Btooom! were a pool, it would be an Olympic-sized one, but it would only have about a foot of water in it, representing that it has the potential to be profound but is pathetically shallow as it stands. I'm currently of the opinion that your review of it wants us to, continuing the metaphor, jump into that foot of water from the high diving platform. Maybe we'll survive but we won't get the experience that we should have and we probably won't enjoy it.

Though perhaps that is because the show is overly cheesy in Japanese IMO. At first I thought it was supposed to be a parody, since the main character strikes me as a really cheesy & mocking rendition of Light Yagami, but I'm not certain. The show exists to me in an unfortunate "limbo" between "srs show" and "tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top parody".

I deign to discuss the dub and so I will say that I am banking on the dub fixing the show, hopefully "filling the pool" (dub makes it live up to its potential) or, at the very least, firmly establishing if the show is to be taken seriously or regarded as a lackluster parody.

  • celestial_being replied to the topic Re: Ghost in the Shell in the forum.
So Funimation was hit over the head and then, when it awoke, thought it was Aniplex of America?

Will this really sell out, when IMO the expectation is obvious (as was pointed out already herein lol) that a dubbed combo pack will come out a year or so after this import, if even that, and will be much cheaper?

The import of Fate/Zero is still available on RightStuf, and I thought that was a "limited run" as well. Was it? Either way it is not the best sign for Funimation's "plan" but if it was a limited run then it makes a stronger case against Funi's idea. Regardless, now that it is all but certain that a dubbed blu-ray of Fate/Zero will be released in the US, I do not really expect those imports to sell out.

I really don't expect that I will be buying this as this release offers me nothing, to my knowledge, of interest to me that I cannot get from simply streaming this. Now if Funimation does not stream this as it airs, and Crunchy also does not, then I'll be irked.

  • Again I'm not really noticing these awesome discounts. RightStuf plays it a tad fast & loose with its PR.

Put me in the "waiting for October releases" camp as that'll help decide what I buy now and what I save to be my obligatory purchase(s) at the Sentai Filmworks booth(s).

Plus I'd have to renew that infernal "club card" of theirs again as I let that sucker expire a few months back. As much as I dislike the whole concept as I feel it is underhanded I realize that it'd be foolish to order from them without having it (which is, of course, by design but still).

Did Crunchy never sub the theme song? Funimation did, although they didn't translate (that I saw) the German into English; they just left it as German.

I just went through 2 intros on Crunchy and neither was subbed so I'm wondering.
