Series based on Chūya Koyama's manga to get digital, home video release

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The North American anime licensing company Sentai Filmworks announced on Sunday that it has licensed the Space Brothers (Uchū Kyōdai) television anime series. The company will release the series digitally with a home video release to follow.

The anime adaptation of Chūya Koyama's Space Brothers (Uchū Kyōdai) manga follows the story of two brothers, Mutta and Hibito, who made a vow as kids to travel to space. The younger brother Hibito did become an astronaut, but not Mutta. However, Mutta's life changes one fateful day.

Ayumu Watanabe, director and animation director for various Doraemon anime films, is serving as the series' director. The main cast include Hiroaki Hirata as Mutta Nanba, Kenn as Hibito Nanba, Masako Ikeda as Sharon, and Miyuki Sawashiro as Serika Itō. Crunchyroll is currently streaming the series in various countries as it airs in Japan.

Sentai Filmworks Licenses "Space Brothers"

Jul 1st 2012

HOUSTON, July 1, 2012 — Head for the stars with Sentai Filmworks latest acquisition: Chūya Koyama's Space Brothers! Featuring direction by Ayumu Watanabe (Mysterious Girlfriend X), character designs by Koji Yabuno (Naruto Shippūden: Blood Prison) and music by Toshiyuki Watanabe (The Devil Lady), this series certainly has the right stuff to blast off!

Mutta's life has hit rock bottom. He's been fired, blackballed from his profession and now he's had to move back in with his parents. Meanwhile, his kid brother Hibito has been literally riding a rocket and training to be an astronaut. The same career Mutta once dreamed of. So, is it ever too late to go after your dreams? Through a little coercing and a bit of covert activity, Mutta's family and friends can get his resume on the right desk, but from that point on it will be up to Mutta himself. Does he have what it takes to turn his life around and put his footprint on the moon? The first step on the highway to the stars is always the hardest, and in a job where crash and burn isn't just a euphemism, it will be the biggest risk Mutta's ever taken. But with the best support team ever, maybe he'll find what he needs to rekindle the spark inside him and light the biggest candle of them all! Get ready to blast off into the most magnificent tomorrow ever in SPACE BROTHERS!

Space Brothers will begin release through select digital outlets soon with a home video release to follow.

Wow, of all the series this last season, this was the one I was about 80% positive wouldn't be licensed. Considering their experience with Moonlight Mile, I expected they would be a little leery of this one. I wonder if this was a bundle with another show, or perhaps Matt Greenfield had something to do with it being selected.

I guess even I can be surprised by Sentai sometimes.

Maybe, probably, but Sentai's recent dub of the 50-episode Golgo 13 shows that it could happen. I'll hold out that hope

Does anyone in another English speaking country have the license for it?

Not that I know of. I haven't seen any announcements from the UK or Australia. I guess we will have to see.

As you know, I brought this up on ANN and FP, but I might as well post my thoughts here as well.

The "bundle" theory is my thoughts on it.

YTV is listed as the publisher on CR.
Looking over the YTV shows, Hiiro No Kakera is there as well, which was another recent Sentai announcement.

The interesting one in the YTV section however, is Hanasaku Iroha ...

It is rather interesting because of the Sentai AB'12 Q&A
www.theanimenetwork.com/component/option...ew/id,113134/#113143

Which would also fit the timeline if they picked these 2 up ( 3 if we count HI ) last season before AB and just sat on them until AX.

Yes, that's quite likely. I think it's pretty obvious at this point, that Sentai waits to make announcements until just before a physical product is ready or a stream is going live.
